In the 1830's, the Choctaw Indians Tribe of Mississippi, was forced by the U.S. Government to surrender their homeland
to white settlers and to relocate to Oklahoma. Many Choctaws died along the way and so did the Indian Pony. Chief Nitibechi
called the journey the "Trail of Tears". Government policies such as
the Tick Eradication Program led to the near-extermination
of Indian horses. Today the remaining pure Choctaw Indian Ponies are listed as critical.
At Spanish Treasures Farm, in the hills of Northwest, Louisiana, we are working to conserve the last of the 100% pure Choctaw
horses. We promote the utilization of the Indian Pony in an Equine Program (EP), use them on trail rides, 4-H Program, and our
granddaughter plans to show her pony in jumping events.
Our Choctaw herd was purchased from the Bryant Rickman Family of Oklahoma, who were partners with the late Gilbert
Jones. The movie "Hidalgo" was made in honor of the late Gilbert Jones and in affiliation with the Rickman family. We are grateful
to Bryant Rickman and Dr. Phil Sponenberg of Virginia Tech for the
guidance in putting our herd together. If you would like to own one
of these great horses and join us in our efforts you may email
